Early recognition and treatment improve outcomes for mother, developing fetus, and infant. Caution is warranted when prescribing antidepressants to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, but evidence is mounting that the risks of untreated maternal depression outweigh those of pharmacologic treatment for it.
