Antihistamines, decongestants, and cromolyn sodium nasal sprays are often tried first. Second generation prescription antihistamines have fewer side effects than over-the-counter ones. Steroid nasal sprays are extremely effective and safe for the entire range of allergy symptoms. Immunotherapy requires a lengthy course of injections, but it can bring long-term relief for severe allergies.
