AB Video capsule endoscopy (VCE), an important innovation in diagnostic endoscopy, was approved in 2001 and is now widely available. In this system, the patient swallows a miniature high-resolution camera that is propelled by peristalsis through the gastrointestinal tract. It is particularly useful in examining the small intestine, which is difficult to visualize by conventional endoscopic techniques.
