In particular, dyslipidemia, an important reversible risk factor for cardiovascular disease, has been linked to HIV infection and its treatment. Although controversy remains as to whether people with HIV infections will develop premature coronary heart disease, it seems prudent to manage dyslipidemia in these patients just as we do in our HIV-negative patients. Interactions between lipid-lowering drugs and antiretroviral drugs require special attention.
