AB Extensive loss of the ureter is a potential complication of surgery performed to relieve ureteral obstruction caused by retroperitoneal fibrosis. The authors describe four cases in which renal autotransplantation restored normal urinary drainage. The preoperative evaluation and technicalities of renal autotransplantation are reviewed, The advantages of this procedure, as compared to ileal substitution, for patients with extensive ureteral loss are discussed.
