Defining surgical risk

Surgical risk is calculated using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons risk-score model, which provides a prediction of a patient’s risk for surgical mortality and major complications. Patients are as signed a risk category based on the following scores:

  • High risk: > 8%.

  • Intermediate risk: 4% to 8%

  • Low risk: < 4%.
