2020, Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic DisordersCitation Excerpt :This number has decreased recently at our institution in an attempt to be compliant with current guidelines. Of the approximately 200,000 filters placed annually, Medicare data have previously conveyed retrieval rates between 5% and 15%.15,16 Several single-center studies estimated this number to be closer to 20%.17,18
National Trends in Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement and Retrieval Procedures in the Medicare Population Over Two Decades
2018, Journal of the American College of RadiologyCitation Excerpt :This trend is likely attributable to ongoing initiatives focusing on appropriate filter utilization. Despite increasing emphasis on the longitudinal follow-up of patients with IVC filters focused on removing filters when no longer clinically warranted [15], we show that retrieval rates remain under 15% among all provider specialty groups. We acknowledge, however, that the retrieval rates we report may not be generalizable more broadly because retrieval may be prioritized less in Medicare beneficiaries than in other populations (eg, younger trauma patients undergoing prophylactic filter placement).
Osteodiskitis of Lumbar Spine Due to Migrated Fractured Inferior Vena Cava Filter
2018, World NeurosurgeryCitation Excerpt :Unfortunately, the patient declined undergoing the procedure. The purpose of IVC filter placement is to reduce the mortality risk from symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) in high-risk patients who cannot be anticoagulated.11,12 However, clear guidelines regarding their use are not available yet.1,13,14
