IAS 2021
Video and written summaries from the 11th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science, held July 18-21, 2021
Gene Therapy for HIV Cure
With: Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, and Alan J. Taege, MD
Alan J. Taege, MD, and Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, consider the potential for cell and gene therapies to cure HIV based on the The HIV Cure & Gene Therapy Forum opening session at the 11th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science.
Beyond Lifelong Meds for HIV: Approaches to Cure Therapy
With: Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, and Alan J. Taege, MD
Hear about conceptual and research approaches to cure therapy for HIV including shock and kill, block and lock, immunotherapy, and gene therapy. Cleveland Clinic physicians Alan J. Taege, MD, and Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, comment on the 11th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science session, Thinking Beyond Lifelong Treatment in HIV.
Growing old with HIV
With: Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD; Alan J. Taege, MD
Alan J. Taege, MD, and Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, from Cleveland Clinic discuss the session, Growing old with HIV: Comorbidities and ageing, presented at the 2021 International AIDS Society conference.
People Living With HIV Appear to Experience More Severe COVID-19 and Increased In-Hospital Mortality
Presenter: Silvia Bertagnolio, MD, World Health Organization, Department of HIV, Hepatitis and STI Programmes, Geneva, Switzerland
HIV infection is a significant independent risk factor for both severe illness and in-hospital mortality resulting from COVID-19, according to a new global analysis from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Gene Therapy to Combat HIV
Presenter: Hans-Peter Kiem, MD, PhD, Director, Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Program Clinical Research Division, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Professor, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, WA
Gene therapies currently under investigation may one day enhance the control or eradication of HIV.
HIV Vaccine Researchers Search for Holy Grail of Broadly Neutralizing Antibodies
Presenter: Lynn Morris, PhD
Inducing broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) is considered the holy grail for a preventive HIV vaccine. But four decades into the HIV epidemic, researchers are still searching.
Aging People Living with HIV Experience High Rates of Comorbidities
Presenter: Lene Ryom, MD, PhD
As the population of people living with HIV (PLWH) grows older, they will be affected by comorbidities associated with aging. The burden of comorbidity increases with age; however, this may not be HIV-specific, and treating common risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD), for instance, may help mitigate comorbidities, according to Lene Ryom, MD, PhD, Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections, Copenhagen, Denmark.
COVID-19 Disruptions in Care Will Lead to Increased HIV-Related Deaths
Presenter: John Stover
According to John Stover, Vice President of Avenir Health, new projection models have determined that disruptions in healthcare services impacted by closing of facilitates, cessation of services, shortage of healthcare workers, disruptions of supplies, travel restrictions, and fear of accessing health facilities owing to COVID-19 may lead to hundreds of thousands of new HIV infections as well as additional deaths from AIDS.
Long-Acting AntiRetroviral Therapy (ART) Can Be Considered Part of AIDS Arsenal
Presenter: Eric S. Daar, MD
Novel, long-acting antiretroviral therapy (ART) formulations are poised to change how clinicians manage patients with AIDS. Until now, all treatment regimens have required daily dosing, at a minimum, and have included second-generation integrase inhibitors, with two-drug regimens preferred. There have been multiple advances in recent years both in treatment strategies and ART regimens. These new long-acting ART regimens are promising for patients who are virologically suppressed, struggle with daily therapy (inconsistent), or have multidrug resistance, according to Eric S. Daar, MD, Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles.
