Gene Therapy for HIV Cure
With: Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, and Alan J. Taege, MD
Alan J. Taege, MD, and Brian F. Mandell, MD, PhD, consider the potential for cell and gene therapies to cure HIV based on the The HIV Cure & Gene Therapy Forum opening session at the 11th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science. Dr. Taege notes the only known cure for HIV occurred in 2 patients receiving bone marrow transplant with CCR5-delta 32 deletion. Current gene therapies include CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) and CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy, and perhaps in combination along with broadly neutralizing antibodies.
